Container Shelters for Farm Machinery: Size & Storage Guide
Plan a farm machinery shelter around your equipment. Check tractor dimensions, entry clearance, access and kit inclusions before choosing a container dome.
A container shelter for farm machinery should fit the equipment, the way you move it and the space you need around it. Start with your largest machine in its normal storage configuration, then check usable entry clearance and access before comparing roof sizes. A footprint alone cannot tell you whether a tractor and its attached implement will fit.
This guide helps you prepare a practical shortlist for a farm equipment storage bay. It covers measuring, layout, open ends versus an end wall and the information to send with a quote request.
1. Measure the whole machine, including attachments
Make a list of what you actually intend to park under cover: tractors, mowers, trailers, implements or other equipment. For each item, record:
- Overall width: include mirrors, tyres and any attachment that remains fitted during storage.
- Overall length: include the drawbar, loader or rear implement in the intended parked position.
- Overall height: measure to the highest fixed point in the configuration used when entering and parking.
- Access needs: note doors, service panels, hitching space and the route needed to remove an implement.
Use your equipment manufacturer's instructions for parking and attachment positions. Do not assume that a raised attachment can be left overhead or that a machine will fit simply because its cab is below the roof peak.
2. Plan a usable bay, not just a roof footprint
Sketch the machines on a plan of the proposed shelter area. Mark the container sides, entrance, exit and the space needed to walk around equipment. If two machines share a bay, check whether you can retrieve either without first moving the other.
For example, two items each 2.4m wide occupy 4.8m before allowing any space between them or beside them. A nominal 6m-wide shelter therefore does not provide 6m of free space around those machines. Confirm the usable internal dimensions and choose working clearances to suit your equipment and activities.
Also check the approach outside the roof. A long trailer may fit when parked but still need more room to line up, turn or reverse into the bay. Mark the proposed layout on the ground before ordering.
3. Check entry clearance separately from peak height
Budget Domes product listings describe peak height above the container. That measurement is not the entry clearance. The curved roof profile, container arrangement and any end wall affect where a tall or wide machine can pass.
Send your supplier the machine's full width and height together, rather than height alone. Ask for confirmation of the opening and usable roof profile at the position where the equipment will travel and park. Include details of attachments, mirrors and proposed wall components.
4. Compare shelter sizes against your layout
These examples from the Budget Domes range are starting points for a shortlist. Footprint means nominal width multiplied by length, not guaranteed usable parking space or a promise that a particular tractor will fit.
| Shelter option | Nominal footprint | Question to resolve |
|---|---|---|
| 6x6m Dome + End Wall | 36m² | Will the machine and attachment fit with access space and the included end wall? |
| 8x6m Dome | 48m² | Does the extra span accommodate your intended arrangement and clearance? |
| 10x6m Dome | 60m² | Does a wider bay help, or is equipment length the limiting dimension? |
If length is the constraint, browse the full container dome shelter range rather than selecting a wider but equally short model. Allow for planned equipment purchases as well as what you own today.
5. Choose open ends or an end wall for the job
Open ends can be useful when your layout calls for access from both directions. The 8x6m Dome and 10x6m Dome examples above have open ends. An end-wall option adds weather protection at one end, but the 6x6m Dome + End Wall is not a fully enclosed building.
Consider the direction of weather at your site and whether equipment needs to pass through the bay. Do not treat an open shelter as sealed storage: wind-driven rain and dust may still reach equipment. Tell the supplier about your intended configuration before ordering, and confirm compatibility before adding walls later.
6. Budget for the complete farm storage project
Compare quotations with the same scope. The linked Budget Domes products include the dome structure, fabric cover and mounting hardware; shipping containers, installation and delivery are excluded. Check the current listing and formal quotation for the exact inclusions and price.
Prepare separate allowances for containers, site preparation, the working surface, foundation and anchoring design, installation and delivery access. Ask about available product documents, and confirm site-specific design and approval requirements before committing to the project. The dome shelter foundation guide and council approval guide explain questions to raise during planning.
Farm machinery shelter questions
What size container shelter do I need for a tractor?
There is no single size for every tractor. Measure overall width, length and height with the attachments you will store, then allow for access and manoeuvring. Compare those requirements with the selected shelter's usable dimensions and entry opening.
Can I store a tractor and trailer together?
Plan the combined length, hitching area and access route first. Check whether the trailer stays attached and whether you need to remove either item independently. A larger floor area is only useful if its proportions suit that arrangement.
Does an end wall make the shelter fully enclosed?
No. A single end wall provides additional protection at one end. Check the exact configuration rather than assuming it includes doors or complete enclosure.
Are containers included with the shelter kit?
Shipping containers are not included with the linked Budget Domes models. Installation and delivery are also excluded. Request a written quote for the selected model and your delivery location.
Get a quote matched to your equipment
Request a farm machinery shelter quote with your preferred model, delivery postcode, machine dimensions, attachment details, proposed container arrangement and open-end or end-wall preference. Include a simple layout sketch and explain how you need to enter and leave the bay. This gives Budget Domes a clearer starting point for discussing the right product and the dimensions you need to confirm.
