Container Shelters for Caravan & Boat Storage: Planning Guide
Plan covered caravan or boat storage with practical checks for trailer length, rooftop clearance, reversing space and container shelter options.
A container shelter for a caravan or boat needs to accommodate the complete parked vehicle, its entry path and the space you use around it. Measure the caravan including its drawbar, or the boat while it is on its trailer, before selecting a shelter. Then confirm the usable opening and roof profile for the exact model and container arrangement.
This guide helps Australian owners plan covered storage between trips. It explains what to measure, how to compare shelter proportions and what to include in a quote request, without assuming that every caravan or trailer boat fits the same bay.
What should you measure for caravan or boat storage?
Use the actual storage and towing configurations, rather than relying only on the advertised body length. Write the measurements on a simple sketch and note which accessories stay fitted.
| Measurement | Caravan checks | Boat and trailer checks |
|---|---|---|
| Overall length | Rear-mounted accessories to the front of the coupling, including the drawbar | Trailer coupling to the rearmost part in the intended storage configuration |
| Overall width | Body and protruding fittings, plus space to use the entry door | Widest point of the boat or trailer, including guards and fitted accessories |
| Overall height | Highest rooftop accessory, such as an air conditioner or aerial | Highest point while on the trailer, including any canopy or other fitted equipment |
| Space during storage | Steps, doors, compartments and access for loading | Access for the winch, coupling, cover and routine checks |
Record the position of tall accessories as well as the maximum height. A curved roof gives different clearance near its sides. If you intend to fold or remove an accessory, check the manufacturer's instructions and make sure the routine is practical every time you park.
Why body length can lead to the wrong shelter choice
A caravan body measurement can leave out the drawbar or rear-mounted equipment. A boat's hull length can leave out parts of the trailer and the stored motor position. Those omitted parts still need room beneath the proposed roof if full-length cover is your goal.
For example, a hypothetical 5.5m body with a further 1.5m of drawbar and rear accessories occupies 7m overall before allowing room to move around it. A shelter described as 6m long would not cover that full length. This is a measuring example, not a typical vehicle specification.
Choose length and width separately. Extra width does not compensate for an insufficient roof length. If you want to leave the tow vehicle attached, measure the complete combination and check whether the approach and parking arrangement allow it.
Check the roof opening before relying on peak height
Budget Domes listings describe peak height above the container. Peak height is not the usable entry clearance. Ask for the opening dimensions and roof profile that apply to your selected shelter, containers and any wall components.
Share the vehicle's width and height together, plus the location of rooftop accessories. Confirm clearance along the whole travel path and in the final parked position. Changes in ground level between the approach and bay are another detail to show the supplier and installer.
Plan reversing space, doors and access to the containers
A vehicle can fit in the final parking position yet be awkward to get there. Sketch the driveway, gate, container doors and proposed bay. Mark where the tow vehicle will be while lining up, hitching and unhitching.
- Approach: identify how you will line up with the opening and where the tow vehicle will move.
- Daily access: leave usable space beside the caravan door or around the boat cover.
- Container doors: check that stored vehicles do not block the doors you need to open.
- Two vehicles: decide whether each must be removable independently.
- Future equipment: allow for a different trailer, additional accessories or a larger caravan if that is part of your plan.
Mark out the proposed footprint on the ground before ordering and compare it with your measurements. Do not infer a universal turning allowance from a shelter's nominal size.
Compare container shelter options for your storage plan
The following Budget Domes models have open ends. Use their nominal dimensions to begin a shortlist, then confirm usable space and product suitability for your vehicle and site.
| Model | Nominal footprint | Planning question |
|---|---|---|
| 8x6m Dome | 48m² | Is 6m of roof length sufficient for the complete parked vehicle? |
| 10x6m Dome | 60m² | Would extra width help side access while still meeting your length requirement? |
| 8x12m Dome | 96m² | Would the longer bay better suit the full trailer or caravan arrangement? |
These are comparison points, not fit guarantees. Browse the complete container dome shelter range if your layout needs different proportions. The nominal footprint is not a promise of unobstructed usable floor area.
Open shelter or an end-wall configuration?
Open ends may suit a layout where you want access from both directions. A compatible end-wall configuration may add weather protection at one end, but it also changes how you can enter and leave. Ask about the exact wall arrangement and its opening before choosing.
An open-ended shelter is not sealed storage. Consider wind-driven rain, dust and access by other people when deciding whether it suits what you intend to store. If your priority is lockable, fully enclosed vehicle storage, explain that requirement before purchasing. A roof and a single end wall do not by themselves provide a fully enclosed garage.
Prepare the site and compare the complete cost
Plan a surface suitable for parking and moving your vehicle, with drainage that does not direct water into the storage bay. Discuss the shelter, containers, connections and ground conditions with the people responsible for your site-specific foundation and installation. Read our dome shelter foundation guide for the questions to raise, and check approval requirements for the proposed shelter before construction.

Caravan and boat shelter FAQs
What size dome shelter do I need for a caravan?
Start with overall length including the drawbar and accessories, width including protruding fittings, and height to the tallest rooftop item. Add the access space you need, then ask the supplier to confirm the usable opening and roof profile for the model you are considering.
Should I measure a boat on or off its trailer?
If it will be stored on its trailer, measure the whole boat-and-trailer combination in that configuration. Include the coupling, trailer guards, fitted equipment and intended motor position rather than using hull dimensions alone.
Can a caravan and boat share one shelter?
They may be able to, depending on their actual dimensions and the shelter arrangement. Draw both to scale, include side access and decide whether either must be removable without moving the other. Confirm the available roof clearance at both parking positions.
Will an open container shelter keep everything dry?
Do not assume complete weather exclusion from an open-ended structure. Discuss exposure, the proposed orientation and any compatible wall options with the supplier, and choose storage arrangements suited to your vehicle.
Request a quote with the details that matter
Request a caravan or boat storage shelter quote with your delivery postcode, preferred model, full vehicle dimensions, accessory details and proposed container layout. Include a sketch of the approach, note whether the tow vehicle will stay attached, and explain which doors or compartments you need to access during storage.
